In 2017, the newly appointed Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Dr. Darryl Plecas, became concerned about financial irregularities involving two senior administrators of the B.C. Legislature, the House Clerk and the Sergeant-at-Arms. Stories of purchases including art, expensive luggage and even a wood-splitter and trailer valued at $13,000 – all billed back to the Legislative Assembly – circulated around the legislative offices.He also heard concerns regarding questionable retirement and pay benefits as well as major and costly changes to severance and wage payments to the two officials.
Sounding the alarm on these alleged misdeeds, however, cost him dearly. House Speaker Darryl Plecas accused the House clerk and sergeant-at-arms of flagrant overspending and inappropriate payouts of cash "in the range of a million dollars.''

After hackers penetrated Illinois’ statewide voter registration database prior to the 2016 U.S. election, the Illinois State Board of Elections was tasked with creating and implementing a program to support all 108 local election officials to “defend, detect, and recover” from cyberattacks. As a result, the Illinois State Board of Elections is spending nearly $7 million in federal funds to create and administer the Cyber Navigator Program which provides training, grants and risk assessments to all program participants. Cyber Navigators work directly with election officials to ensure the use of best practices and to assist in increasing cyber security posture prior to 2020.
