CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF COGEL AT THE 46TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
This year's conference promises to be one for the books as we celebrate 50 years of COGEL. The association can trace its origins to a December 1974 conference at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC., organized by an ad hoc group of executives of newly-formed federal and state "ethics" agencies. The conference brought together 43 representatives of agencies responsible for the administration and enforcement of conflict of interest, campaign finance and lobbying laws. The meeting was made possible by a grant from The George Gund Foundation of Cleveland, Ohio, and the assistance of the Council of State Governments in Lexington, Kentucky. A major purpose of the meeting was to facilitate the exchange of information among the various newly-created governmental ethics agencies.
Anticipating the end of the National Municipal League's role, representatives of various governmental ethics agencies decided to create a formal organization. COGEL was officially established at the 1978 conference in Minneapolis. In recent years, COGEL annual conferences have attracted over 500 participants, demonstrating the growing interest and importance of governmental ethics laws.
This year, we're pulling out all the stops to celebrate COGEL's 50th anniversary with a spectacular night at the Grammy Museum. It's going to be an event to remember—this is a can't-miss celebration!
