COGEL Annual Conference 2013COGEL invited members to the 35th Annual Conference, in Quebec, Canada. Our Québec hosts graciously arranged for up-and-coming staff from their organizations and university students to attend the 2013 conference as Rapporteurs. Rapporteurs attended each session and listened to the proceedings. After the session, they summarized what was discussed (themes, key points, contentious areas) into a one-page report. See sessions summaries here. COGEL Annual Conference 2012COGEL invited members to the 34th Annual Conference, in Columbus, Ohio, on December 2-5, 2012! This thought provoking and educational conference celebrated professionals in the fields of ethics, campaign finance, lobbying, elections and freedom of information. Plenary speakers included Ohio Governor John R. Kasich, United States Representative Joyce Beatty (OH-3), Hon. David Xiao, Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, and a retrospective of the role of super PACs in the 2012 presidential elections from Cynthia L. Bauerly, then Commissioner of the FEC; Trevor Potter, member, Caplin and Drysdale; and Mike B. Wittenwyler, attorney, Godfrey & Kahn, S.C. Building on the idea of interdisciplinary networking from the 2011 conference, the conference featured COGEL BINGO! Attendees sought to complete their bingo cards with signatures from various disciplines. The conference brought insights into: ✪ current hot topics And a focus on networking starting with a "speed dating" session on "what’s working for you”. This along with interesting plenary sessions led by John Avlon, author and Senior Political Columnist for Newsweek and the Daily Beast and CNN contributor as well as a video presentation and discussion about the business community's thoughts about campaign finance from Charles Kolb, President, Committee for Economic Development. Being in the United States Capital gave new relevance to the discussion topics in the variety of disciplines. Plenary speakers included Spencer Overton, Professor of Law, The George Washington University Law School and Former Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Policy; Jeanne Cummings, Assistant Managing Editor, POLITICO; Drago Kos, Former Chairman of the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption in Slovenia and Chairman of the Group of States Against Corruption; and a debate on lobbying regulation between Meredith McGehee, Policy Director, Campaign Legal Center and David Wenhold, President, American League of Lobbyists moderated by Elizabeth Newlin Carney, Contributing Editor, National Journal.
