Trusted Elections: Strategies for Building and Maintaining Public Confidence

Public trust is the cornerstone of credible elections, yet election management bodies around the world are facing unprecedented scrutiny and rising skepticism. This Elections Roundtable will focus on practical strategies and real-world examples to proactively build trust and reinforce public confidence in the legitimacy of elections.

Panelists

Michael Boda

Chief Electoral Officer, Saskatchewan, Elections Saskatchewan

Dr. Michael Boda has served as the Canadian province of Saskatchewan's Chief Electoral Officer since 2012, conducting three general elections, many by-elections, and introducing both the province's first permanent register of voters and a new election management system. Previously, Dr. Boda has served on the senior staff of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and has been a visiting research fellow at the Brookings Institute and the National Endowment for Democracy. He was COGEL's president in 2023.

Christopher Piper

Principal and Co-Founder, Advance Elections

Chris Piper has over 20 years of elections administration experience and is the co-founder and principal of Advance Elections LLC, an election administration consulting firm focused on strengthening security and building organizational capacity for state and local officials. He previously served as Virginia’s chief election official and Commissioner of the Department of Elections from 2018 to 2022, as well as the Executive Director of the Virginia Public Access Project. Drawing on his extensive background in executive management and public service, Chris also teaches strategic leadership and serves on several national election task forces and nonprofit boards.

Jonathan Stonestreet

Interim Director of the Democracy Program, The Carter Center

Jonathan Stonestreet is currently interim director of the Democracy Program at The Carter Center. He joined the Center in 2014 and specializes in election observation. He has organized Carter Center observation missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, and Venezuela. Jonathan managed the Center's observation effort in Fulton County, Georgia, for the 2024 U.S. election.
